The Federal Gubmint isn't doing what it should, again

I notice that the President took a victory lap around NYC and New Jersey, and went back to working the election. New York and the surrounding areas look like they have taken a worse beating than what Katrina did to New Orleans. I recall the press shellacking President Bush for not getting FEMA out to New Orleans fast enough to make things better. I hear crickets on tv when the Press observes what our President is doing to help, and the timeliness of Federal responsiveness.

Looking at The Atlantic's coverage of the current disaster, it doesn't look like enough FEMA goin' 'round Jersey City/ New York, either. The Feds need to get electricity and fuel to those trapped in their apartments before this becomes a human tragedy.

It was easy to be dismissive of Hurricane Sandy as she made her trek to the Northeast; We of the Barco were in Fort Lauderdale Beach (On the OCEAN side) for summer 2004, and we evacuated twice in August from worse storms. Our region was devastated, but Florida is a bit more prepared for these disasters and bounces back fast.  Jacksonville, however went two weeks without electrical power in September of 2004, after Hurricane Jeanne trashed the region. No air conditioning for Jacksonville! They got by and so will the Northeast. They need heat for the elderly, food for all and an organized rebuilding plan. Lets hope the election doesn't make those poor people wait much longer for the relief they need.

Have a safe weekend.

UPDATE:
Regular reader LL has a nice comment;

"I echo your sentiments. However, there is something to be said for applying common sense to life and stacking some canned goods and a Coleman stove away along with potable water. I'm not saying that people should go 'survivalist', however it's not expensive nor is it ever imprudent to be prepared."

Yep. The Spousal Unit thinks that I'm nuts for keeping a closet full of long life foods, MRE's (7 Trays!)
a 50 gallon water tank, cans upon cans of dehydrated stuff, pre-prepared meats, etc. I won't mention the hundreds of bottles of fine and ok wines, and other spirits. And weapons. With ammo. Boxes of ammo.  Long and short range weapons for the zombie apocalypse (Read: People who rely on Gubmint Handouts for daily bread). My preference would be to make it to the boat if it is still there. The St Johns River is a huge place with lots of little coves to hide out in brimming with fish and wildlife to feed off of. Otherwise, I will only need a vehicle with long fuel legs to get me to the safety of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where those Militant Lutherans live in the Ishpeming Triangle. I'm pretty sure the adherents of a satanic cult based on the other side of the world will never subjugate that area of rural America.

Even if I grab the pack and the three bins we are set for a few weeks.

MRE's stacked in the back. (Meals Rejected for Eating)

Example of MRE. 5 lbs of pasta and sausage. Yum (Not). Six more on the shelf.

I got these Portable Food Pantries from Sams. You can get a years worth for about $5K.

This holds 50 gallons of liquid. Fill before storm. Otherwise, it will hold gasoline for the run up north.

As LL said, the storm or catastrophe may still take away your gear but better to buy during times of low cost than not have foods available at any cost.

You can always be at the point of the storm and even loose those measures that you put aside. Hopefully others not wiped out will stand with their neighbors.

I don't trust the government to help me - EVER. When seconds count, the government is weeks away. I know that's not how it should be. But that's how it always is.

Obama took victory LAPS, plural, where Sandy was concerned. And what LL said.

Buck and Gene;
Our President has more nerve than a broken tooth. Same goes for that a$$ maggot Bloomberg. Bloomberg is long on vision (No big gulp drinks or fatty foods!) but short on common sense or disaster management.

A Marathon, indeed.
